Description:

The Reef Octopus® skimmers are powered by the Hailea OTP pumps. They are built with high quality acrylic. The skimmer has a gate valve output which allows for more adjustment of the skimmer compared to ball valves. The collection cup has a quick release neck for easy removal for cleaning. It requires 1/2 inch of clearance to remove the cup. The Octopus skimmers uses metric plumbing parts. The pump has an improved venturi design and pinwheel impeller. The DNWB skimmer requires a feed pump to feed water to the skimmer. The recommended maximum flow rating for this skimmer is 250gph. These numbers are based on zero back pressure on the output plumbing. If you add 90 degree bends on the plumbing back to a sump you may need to back off the amount of water being feed through the skimmer. We recommend that you use a ball valve inline from your feed pump to the skimmer allowing you to control the water flow. Below are the test results from the old impeller to the new improved impeller.

Stray voltage, even in small amounts, can cause a number of subtle or dramatic problems in an aquarium. Below are some know symptoms caused by stray voltage. A step by step guide to locate and determine the source of the voltage.

Stray voltage, even in small amounts, can cause a number of subtle or dramatic problems in an aquarium. I strongly advise that a ground probe to always be used within an aquarium. Below are some know symptoms caused by stray voltage. Tripping GFI switches and breakers are not always a sign of leaky voltage.

HLLD (Head and Lateral Line Erosion Disease)in fish.

Sudden Death of Tank Inhabitants

Unusual Behavior of Tank Inhabitants

Loss of zooxanthellae in SPS and LPS coral

Tissue recession and polyp bail-out in SPS coral

Shriveled up and discolored soft coral

How To Test for Stray Voltage

Obtain a voltage meter. They can generally be found for less than $20 at most automotive parts or hardware stores.

Turn the selector to the lowest “AC Voltage” setting range from 0-200.

Insert the tip of the black lead to a ground source and drop the red lead into the aquarium.

Watch the meter for any reading. Any reading may indicate there is voltage leaking in your system.

How To Identify the Voltage Leak Source

Disconnect each electrical appliance (heaters, pumps, lights, chiller) associated with your tank one at a time and retest for voltage after each unit is disconnected. To be certain the suspected product is leaking current, remove the item and place in a bucket of water outside of the confines of your aquarium, plug in and retest.

How To Solve the Voltage Leak

Replace (recommended) or repair the faulty unit. Always test the tank once again to make sure that you have eliminated the problem.

Install a simple grounding probe in the tank to avoid damage to the tank inhabitants. This may temporarily take care of the symptoms of stray voltage, but it does not cure the cause of the problem.

Almost a year ago we introduce the reef aquarium hobby to the Metal Halide lamps manufactured by Nueco Germany. We were excited to work with this company in providing the US reef keeper with a fresh, new, quality made metal halide lamp. This has been a long process but we have finally have two lamps that deserve attention. We have been thoroughly testing several 20k and 14.5k in all wattages over actual tanks. We are thrilled with the results. The par stands up with the competition and color is worthy of the lighting up the greatest of reefs.

BH‐90 skimmer is totally a new hang on skimmer, not like your common hang on design, it have a cylindrically main body and use the siphon to feed water in to the skimmer which reduces the load on the pump while increasing the air generated.

This skimmer skims the top of the water surface avoiding the ugly oil buildup on the water surface. A cylindrical reaction chamber, the bubble chamber and conical body to neck transition，all help disperse the air gently and reducing turbulence as the collected organics make it into the collection cup. It is also very easy to be set up. Two adjustable PVC screws makes it could be stably fixed on your aquarium tanks.

Designed with the hobbyist in mind, these all-in-one reactors are simple to setup up, saves valuable space and conserves costly energy. Powered by our energy efficient water blaster pump to provide the correct amount of feed flow for the bio-pellet media. Water is directly injected into the media chamber enhancing the pumps performance and provides even distribution of flow through the media. The water inlet /bottom chamber’s is a specially engineered structure that prevents the media from exiting the chamber and entering the pump when the power is off. A rigid sieve plate fixed on the top cover to prevent the leakage of pellets through the output of the unit. Unique in design this reactor doesn’t have a pipe in the middle of chamber making it super easy to remove the cover to refill the pellet media. The cover has four install orientations, makes it easy to be set up in your sump.

Each Mazarra LED Module comes with three sets of optics,
ranges from 100°, 70° to 40° (factory default is 70°). Installing optics will enhance penetration of light over a greater depth of water by converging light from the LED bulbs, but at the same time reducing the coverage area. By mix-and-matching different types of optics to be installed, you would be able to customize the overall appearance and performance of your Mazarra LED Lighting System.

NOTE: You must install one of the three types of optics on every bulb. The optics also serves as a protective barrier that prevents water and moisture from damaging the LED bulbs.

WARNING: Installing the 40° optics will converge light into a narrow beam, incorrect usage of optics may result in bleaching of your corals from over-exposure to high intensity light.

SIZE: Every skimmer has a minimum and maximum capacity of water purification and choosing the appropriate skimmer for your system is very important. Generally speaking, a skimmer size should be matched to your bioload and system. Of course, the biomass and the average amount of food added affect the requirements of water purification and filtration equipment to an extent. Aquarium enthusiasts should make decisions by the actual situation. Key elements to look for when choosing the right size skimmer for your system: processing rate, air pull, design and most importantly neck size.

My skimmer pump is noisy!
This could be the result of a few things, but keep in mind that all pumps of any manufacturer is going to make noise. Placement and surface that a pump is placed into can also affect the noise of a pump. If you have a hollow surface under the skimmer pump then it acts like a drum and will enhance the noise. You can use some mat materials to help dampen noise and vibration.

Take the pump apart and check that nothing has been sucked into the pump. Check the pin wheel impeller and make sure that no pins are broken off. Broken pins is a sign that something was sucked into the pump causing the pins to shear off. This will put the impeller out of balance and you will need to purchase a new one.

Clean the impeller assembly at least once every 6 months. Calcium will build up on certain parts and cause the pump to run harder which in turn will make it louder.

Check the shaft to see if it has broken. A broken shaft is another indication that something was sucked into the pump. The pump will still run but everything will be out of balance and make a lot of noise.

Make sure you have the air hose attached to the silencer.

My pump will not run unless I blow into the venturi air hose.
Sometimes a air pocket will sit inside the skimmer pump and cause the impeller to spin in air. If it does not have enough water in the pump body the pin wheel cannot get started. Blowing air into the line will force the pocket of air out and allow water into the pump housing which will start it spinning.

Having to blow into air venturi hose can be a sign of a clogged venturi or air hose. Make sure the venturi is free of salt creep as well as the air hose.

This could also be a sign the magnet impeller is going bad. Magnetic impellers seem to lose there magnification over time and need to be replaced.

I can hear my pump humming but no water is being pumped.
Check the pin wheel impeller make sure it is free to rotate back and forth on the shaft. If it is stiff then it needs to be cleaned or the pin wheel assembly needs service. Check out our video instruction on how to correct this. This is a service that needs to be done on the Sicce PSK-2500 pumps.

This could also be a bad magnet impeller and may need to be replaced.

I am having start-up problems with my skimmer pump.
Check to make sure the impeller, air hose and venturi are all clean and free of any calcium deposits of salt creep.

Could be a bad magnet impeller that needs replacing. We find that magnets tend to lose their magnification over time and may need replacing.

How often should I clean my skimmer pump?
Because every system varies the maintenance on the pump will also very. It is suggested that you take the pump off every 2-3 months to clean and inspect the pump for breakage, debris and buildup. To clean the pump you make a 50%/50% mixture of vinegar and water. Soak the skimmer pump for at least 2 hours or more. For dirty pumps or pump with high calcification long soakings will be required.

The two things you need to look for is that the pump is covered with at the minimum or 1″ of water about the highest point on the pump and second is that the water level in the sump is below the water outlet pipe on the skimmer. You want to see the water flowing out of the skimmer and drop down into the sump water.

What impact does the sumps water level have on a skimmer?
For in-sump skimmers sump water level stability is key to optimal skimmer performance. We suggest that the water level within the skimmer compartment of the sump be level at all times by strategic placement of baffles or maintained by a quality auto top off unit. Skimmers can be set in a range of water depths and vary from system to system.

1) Chemical Reaction - Some chemicals react with the air that the skimmer produces and causes the skimmer to over produce foamate. Chemicals known to cause skimmers to overflow are, red slime remover, medications, reef/frag putties (epoxy Putty) frag glues, water conditioners, dechlorinators, stress coat, fresh filter socks, newly mixed sale, bacteria additives as well as other dosing medias. In order to remove these chemicals from the water column we suggest that you do several 20% water changes over the period of a month and add a good amount of fresh activated carbon to the system and change out every week till the skimmer has returned to normal operation.

2) Water level in sump - It is important that you place your skimmer in the proper water level. It is also important that the output of the skimmer is not submerged under water unless it is properly vented.

3) Inner water level - If your inner water level is set too high the slightest change in your water chemistry can cause your skimmer to over flow. We suggest that your inner water level to be set at no higher than the collar where the cup meets the body.

4) Blockage - Venturis are like small vacuums and often collect dust and debris from the air which can block the proper amount of air to enter the pump which increases the water being pulled by the pump. It is also common for saltcreap to build up in the port and will need to be removed manually by scraping it away. Make sure you inspect the air venture, silencer and air hose for any debris or salt creep deposits. Also make sure the air hose is not bent preventing air flow into the pump.

My skimmer was working great, now there is no foam head or anything being pulled out of the water?
This is often an indication that you may have a skimmer that is too large for your size aquarium or you have no organic waste to be pulled from the water. Once the skimmer pulls out all the waste matter the skimmer sits in idle till the waste level builds back up to build a healthy foamate.

Another important thing to remember is that whenever you put your hands in the aquarium or feed your tank’s inhabitants you introduce oils into the water column which will break surface tension in the water causing the skimmer foamate to fall. It is very important that you clean your hands before working in the aquarium and remove any oils or soaps. Using fresh activated carbon helps keep down time to a minimal.

Adding chemicals can cause a reaction to your skimmers production of foam. It is best to shut your skimmer down while using any chemicals to treat algae or disease in the aquarium and follow up with large amounts of activated carbon to absorb the chemicals prior to starting the skimmer back up.

My new skimmer is not producing any foam or not collecting any skimmate in the collection cup?
All skimmers require a break in period before any stable formation of foam will be made or start rising within the neck of the skimmer. When first starting your new skimmer set the water level in the skimmer low by keeping the outlet valve all the way open. Do not attempt to raise the water level in the skimmer for at least 2 to 3 weeks or you will run the risk of the skimmer overflowing and flooding the surrounding area. Please be patient during this break in period. Your skimmer is working but it needs to run for some time to allow all residual oils on the acrylic from production and handling to break down before it will build a steady head of foam. Running fresh activated carbon may help with the break in cycle.

What effects does organic concentration have on a skimmer?
The concentration of DOC in aquarium water has a major factor in the skimmer’s performance. It is easier to separate something from water with a higher concentration than water with low DOC. Basically the skimmer can only pull out what is present in the water pulled in by the skimmer pump. The skimmate collection, color and concentration is dependant of what is fed to the tank, the bio-load and the setting of the skimmer. To adjust a skimmer properly users must be patience and regulate it several times over a period of a few days.

Acrylic is a product that is made from fossil fuels. When it comes in contact with a high viscosity chemical such as most household cleaning agents, paint fumes, hair dye, toe polish remover, denatured alcohol or any CFC based compressed can fumes this will cause the acrylic to stress and if the chemical is in direct contact with the acrylic it could cause it to crack or have a pealing effect. It is import to realize that the skimmers we produce pull huge amounts of air through them. It is almost like a small vacuum cleaner running at all times pulling air from throughout the home. When you are working with these harsh chemicals in or around your home simply turn the skimmer off until all the fumes are gone out of the environment. We are not held liable for any acrylic damage due to this crazing effect unless you receive the skimmer in that condition and it has not been used. If you receive a skimmer that has what appears to be defects in the acrylic or a crazing effect and you have not used the skimmer contact us and we will exchange it for you. If you notice that your skimmer does have this crazing effect after it has been setup and running for sometime it does not affect the performance of the skimmer in anyway. While it may not look as pretty as it once did while new it will still function the same. It is important however that you find out the cause of the acrylic crazing and make sure not to continue using the chemicals around the skimmer. Continued use of these damaging chemicals can cause the acrylic to start a pealing process which will deteriorate the material to a point it will break in pieces.

Wipe the walls of the acrylic down with a soft sponge or cotton cloth and fresh water. Never use any chemicals to clean the skimmer or any acrylic products. You should also clean the collection cup and empty all the waste water at this time. If you are gone of long periods of time use the drain on the collection cup to fill a reserve container to hold the waste liquid.
